Ideally, before one buys a house, it is best to get a thorough inspection from a certified inspector that is familiar testing for mold, especially if the house is in a flood zone. For the rest of you who already have homes, there are test kits available. Keeping gutters clean and your roof repaired is essential. If you already know mold exists immediately have the area with mold removed before it spreads. Air purifiers especially designed to purify mold from the air are also available.
